3:1
Paul is majoring on the sovereignty of God, how all His plans and purposes are fulfilled in Christ, and how in Christ Jews and Gentiles are brought together into one people. Paul was in prison when he wrote this letter. Ordinarily this would be thought to be a bad thing, but Paul knew that he was there as part of God’s plan, and it was on behalf of the Gentiles. Outwardly it looked as if the governing authorities were the ones imprisoning Paul, but Paul knew that he was a prisoner of Christ. We need to learn to look at our own lives and see beyond the immediate cause of events, in order to see what God is doing. God, who works through all things for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Rom 8:28).
3:2
This would only make sense to the Ephesians if they had heard of “the stewardship of God’s grace” that was given to Paul. Paul’s life was completely oriented to spreading the gospel of Christ to the Gentiles. When we look at things, whether in our own lives, or in the lives of others, through the eyes of Christ they can look remarkably different.
