Ephesians 4:7,8 - Grace has been given

“Grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.” Again, this is utterly Christ centred, not man centred. We all received grace, undeserved favour. And we received this on the basis of Christ’s gift. None of us earned it nor deserved it, but Christ gave it to us freely because of His goodness.

The quote comes from Psalm 68:18, a psalm that is utterly God centred. It is Christ who won the victory, and He did so without any help from you or me. But He gave gifts to men. The gospel is a free gift from God to all who believe. It is given on the basis of grace and faith. I will say it again, none of us did anything to deserve it, none of us has anything in us to commend us to God. Our only grounds for salvation is the work of Christ. We must never take pride in anything else, and if we do so it will only make us poorer, and we are utter fools to do so.
