19:26-30
Mephibosheth reminds David that he is lame, so following David was not an easy thing to do. Ziba was meant to have readied the donkey for him, but Ziba “betrayed him”. Then Ziba slandered Mephibosheth before David. Mephibosheth adopted a very humble attitude before David. David realises that he has probably been tricked by Ziba, so he ordered Ziba and Mephibosheth to divide the land between them. Mephibosheth announces that he has no real interest in the land, he is only glad that David has returned safely.
19:31-37
The final “conversation” in the chapter is with Barzillai, a Gileadite. He came down to see David on his way back to Jerusalem. He had provided for David during his stay in Mahanaim, he was also very old, being eighty. David invited him to cross the Jordan with him, promising to provide for him in Jerusalem. Barzillai, however, refused, saying he was very old, and because of physical decline was unable to enjoy the good things of life. He preferred to die where his parents had died. He would, however, cross the Jordan a little way with David before returning home.
