Mark 6:34-36 - He had compassion on them

6:34

The crowd had worked out where Jesus and the apostles were heading to, and so had managed to get there ahead of them. My natural reaction would have been to groan and tell them to get lost! Jesus, however, is different from us, and He had compassion on them. They were “like sheep without a shepherd”. The people knew they were missing something, that they needed something, but they did not properly know what it was they needed. Jesus’ response was to teach them many things. Teaching is vital. We lack knowledge and understanding, so part of the task of the church is to give people proper Biblical teaching and instruction.

6:35,36

It was getting late, so the disciples came to Jesus and get Him to send them away. They pointed out that they were in a remote place, it was getting late. This was no doubt done partly out of their own tiredness, but in practical terms it made good sense and was based on the facts of the situation. The people had made their own way there, so it was reasonable to expect them to make their own way back to the surrounding villages in order to get something to eat.
