2 Samuel 19:21-25 - You shall not die

19:21-23

Abishai reacted in typical fashion, wanting Shimei to be put to death for his sins. Abishai, along with Joab, was a son of Zeruiah, hence David’s comment about the sons of Zeruiah. They had a very different approach to that of David. However, we should note that if it hadn’t been for Joab, the kingdom may well have gone by now. Sometimes God works through those who have a very different approach to the one we would adopt. David declared that this was not the day for killing anyone, and Shimei was assured that he would not die.

19:24,25

Next there is an encounter with Mephibosheth. Earlier, Ziba had maligned Mephibosheth, and so David had given Mephibosheth’s land to him. Mephibosheth now approaches the king and explains his failure to follow David. Mephibosheth had a very unkempt appearance, indicating that he had not been happy with the new regime. On seeing him David asks why he had failed to go with him. Remember that David had earlier been very kind to Mephibosheth.
