6:22,23
The daughter of Herodias danced before them. The use of the term “daughter of Herodias” perhaps implies that Herod was not the girl's father. The dancing pleased Herod and the guests. Herod had also probably had had a lot to drink. In his joy he offered to give the girl whatever she wanted, up to half the kingdom. This was a rash promise, but one made on oath, so Herod could not easily renege on the promise.
6:24,25
The girl went to her mother to see what she should ask for. It is possible that the whole thing was planned, but it is perhaps more likely that it wasn’t and Herodias just seized the moment. Whatever the case, Herodias tells her to ask for the head of John the Baptist. She then goes to Herod and makes the request.
