4:11
While being grateful, Paul does not want them to feel that they need to give more. Paul has learned to be content in all circumstances. Note that he had to learn this, and learning it was probably a hard process. We learn both by studying the word, and through experience.
4:12
Paul experienced all sorts of circumstances. There were times when he had plenty, and times when he had little. But he had learned how to be content whatever the situation. This is another nail in the coffin in what is called “prosperity teaching”.
4:13
“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me”. This verse is often misapplied. Paul said this thinking of his work for Christ and the gospel. Indeed, Christ and the gospel were about all that he lived for. And when we live for Christ and the gospel we receive strength from Christ in doing this. We need to make sure that we always look to Christ, for there can be a strong temptation to look for an “easy” way out.
