10:18
This verse expands on the statement in the previous one about the impartiality of the Lord. Worldly judges tend to favour the rich and powerful, and to have less time for the poor and weak. This also applies to judicial or governmental systems. God is not like this. He acts in favour of the fatherless and the widows. He also “loves the foreigner”. These are groups which can easily be forgotten.
10:19
We have seen what God is like, His people are meant to be the same. “Be holy as I am holy” (Lev 11:44; 1 Pet 1:16). The Israelites are also reminded that they too were once slaves, they were weak and oppressed, so they too must have regard for the weak. Likewise, we must love our enemies, because we too were sinners.
