1:3
The Son is “the radiance of God’s glory”. Jesus demonstrates the glory of God, it is in Him that all of God’s plans come to fruition. He is “the exact representation of His being”. In John 14:9 Jesus says that if we have seen Him then we have seen the Father. It is also the Son who sustains the whole universe by His word. Jesus “provided purification for sins”, and then sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in Heaven”.
1:4
The rest of the chapter will be focused on proving the superiority of Jesus to angels. This is done not because there were those who thought that Jesus was an angel, but because Jewish tradition had it that the Law was mediated through angels. So in Christ and the gospel we have something that is greater than what went before. No angel has sat down at the right hand of God. The name of Jesus is infinitely superior to that of any angel.
