Deuteronomy 10:12,13 - What does the Lord require of you?

10:12

"What does the Lord your God ask of you ...", this is reminiscent of Mic 6:8. Moses reminds the people of the basic requirements, at what is the heart of the matter. Sometimes people think that the Law is all about outward appearances, whereas the gospel is concerned about the heart. This is a very superficial view of things. The Law is concerned about the heart, and the gospel is concerned about what we actually do. The key difference is that the Law could not change the heart of man, whereas the Spirit can (see Romans 7 & 8). So what does the Lord require? We are to fear the Lord, and we demonstrate this by walking in all His ways. We are to love Him and to worship Him with all heart and soul. The link between loving and obeying is something that continues with Jesus and the gospel, see John 15.

10:13

"Keep the Lord's commands and statutes I am giving you today, for your own good". The commands of the Lord were not given in order to be burdensome, but for their own good. If they had followed these commands then they would have dwelt long in the land, they would have multiplied and prospered. Jesus said that His burden is light and His yoke is easy. The Lord's commands are good for us.
