Hebrews 1:5,6 - You are my Son

1:5

Having just stated how superior Christ is to the angels, he now goes on to demonstrate this with a series of quotes from the Old Testament. It is worth noting that a number of them come from the Psalms. The Psalms are a rich source of theology. The first quote comes from Psalm 2:7. The words do not imply that at one time God was not Christ’s Father, but stress the deep personal relationship between the Father and the Son. Christ is eternally the Son. The second part comes from 2 Sam 7:14 (or 1 Chron 17:13) and speaks of one of David’s offspring. This could not have been Solomon because of all the failings of Solomon, and the Jews recognised this. It is why the Messiah was referred to as the Son of David.

1:6

It is more difficult to precisely locate this quote. It possibly comes from the LXX of Dead Sea Scrolls version of Dt 32:43, or possibly from Ps 97:7. What is clear is that the truth that the writer is seeking to convey is that the angels are to worship the Son, clearly demonstrating the  superiority of the Son.
