6:3
Gardener here points out that “baptised” is not being used in a ceremonial sense, i.e. referring to the baptismal rite. Instead it is used in a more general sense with the original meaning of the verb, “to immerse, plunge or dip”. Paul is referring to what baptism is all about, and we were baptised into Christ’s death. One of the things that the cross says is that that is where we deserve to be. Christ died on our behalf. We are saying that we want rid of sin in the most complete way possible. So any notion that it would be a good idea to continue sinning is utter nonsense. We identify with Christ’s death on the cross.
6:4
We were baptised into Christ’s death, in order that we could be raised to new life with Him. We want to walk in “newness of life”. Christ did not die for us so that we could continue in our old sinful way of life. Christ was raised from the dead because He had died to sin. If continuing to sin is our goal then Christ and the gospel are of no value nor interest to us.The notion that we can happily continue to sin is just so much nonsense. It shows no appreciation of how destructive sin is, and no appreciation of the glorious new life that Christ calls us to.
