8:1-4
In Exodus we had the instructions for the construction of the Tabernacle. Then in the first seven chapters of Leviticus we had instructions for various offerings, now we come to the consecration of the priests. This falls into several sections (Hess):
The presentation of the priests
The robing and anointing of the priests
The purification offering
The burnt offering
The ordination offering
The consecration
Moses is told to bring Aaron and his sons (the priests) the garments and the various offerings. The whole assembly is to be gathered at the tent of meeting. Moses did as he was commanded.
8:5-13
Moses announced that they were doing everything as the Lord commanded. It is a pity that today so much of the church is not as concerned about doing things as the Lord commanded. First of all Aaron and his sons are brought forward and are washed in water. Most of the attention is focused on Aaron. The tunic, robe and sash are put upon him. Along with the ephod and the urim and thummim. Urim is mentioned eight times in the Bible, and Urim six times. No one is quite sure what they were. Aaron and all the utensils are anointed with oil. Aaron’s sons are then dressed with tunics, sashes and caps.
