9:1-7
The priestly service now begins. Prior to this it was Moses who was officiating, now the priests (Aaron and his sons) perform the sacrifices. So Aaron and his sons are recognised by the community as the priests. First of all Aaron had to offer sacrifices for himself. First he had to offer a sin or purification offering, then a burnt offering. The sin offering dealt with any uncleanness, and the burnt offering with deliberate guilt. Then they offered sacrifices on behalf of the people.
9:8-14
Aaron offers a calf. This is one of the few references to a calf. Hess suggests that a calf is offered in order to atone for Aaron’s culpability in the infamous golden calf incident. Aaron was certainly not qualified to serve as a priest on his own merit. It was only through the sacrifices that he was qualified for the task. In the same way none of us are suitably qualified for service of the Lord. it is only through the blood of Jesus that we are qualified.
