44:3
“I will pour water on a thirsty land”. Israel was desperate, both the people still in Israel, and those in exile. There was a hunger among them, must as there had been a groaning when the Israelites were in slavery in Egypt (Ex 43:7). Now this hunger and thirst would not be coherent, it would not be a hunger purely directed at wanting to know God. There may even have been very little of this, rather they just new that they desperately needed something. And, just as in Egypt, God heard their cry and rescued them. Our God pours water on a thirsty land. We may look at our land and see it having little love or desire for God on the one hand, and having all sorts of problems on the other. We should not lose hope. And the pouring out of the Spirit and God’s blessing on the people would be a key part of this (Acts 2:33).
44:4,5
The descendants would crop up all over the place. They would all become part of Israel. In Ephesians 2 we read of the outworking of this in the gospel. The key element is that people belong to the Lord and to His people. We should note the twofold commitment, the twofold belonging here. We belong to God and we are part of the church.
