43:26
“Review the past for me ... state your case ..” Note first that God has just said that He is the one who blots out sins, now we start talking about Israel’s sins. The gospel involves us facing up to our sin and our sinfulness, it does not sweep it under the carpet. No doubt Israel would argue that she was not guilty, as do most of the human race. We think we are basically OK, less a few minor blemishes. God calls on Israel to look at the past. This would involve the injustices in the courts, the worshipping of idols, the sexual immorality. The child sacrifice, the violence. If we take our societies sexual “morals”, it has hardly produced a wonderful state of affairs. At the final judgement it will be clearly seen that man is guilty, the you and I are guilty. We can argue all we like until that day, but on that day the truth will be made known. Far better to admit our guilt now and receive forgiveness than to protest our innocence and then receive the due penalty for our guilt.
43:27,28
“Your first father sinned”. This could be Adam or Abraham or Moses. They all sinnes, and Scripture clearly portrays this. God sent men to teach Israel, but these men rebelled against God. This is probably a reference to the priests and false prophets. That is why the temple of Jerusalem was destroyed and desecrated and Israel sent into exile. Israel was guilty, as is all of humanity.
