Mark 15:35-37 - Jesus breathed His last

15:35,36
Some thought He was calling for Elijah. There are two reasons they would think this. One is Jesus use of the words “Eloi, Eloi  “ Under the suffering He was going through His words would probably be far from clear. Secondly, there was a sense of climactic times and Elijah was linked with this. The offering of wine vinegar recalls Ps 69:21.

15:37

“With a loud cry Jesus breathed His last”. It was finished! Many people who were crucified lingered at lot longer on the cross than Jesus did. So are we to think that Jesus got off lightly? Certainly not. First, Jesus had been severely beaten beforehand, so much so that Simon of Cyrene had to be brought in to carry the cross. Secondly, the worst aspect of the cross for Jesus was not the physical pain as such, though that was very real, but taking the wrath of God upon Himself, taking our punishment upon Himself. Thirdly, the cross was not just an act of suffering, it was an act of power, an act of defeating sin, death and the devil. The victory had been won, it was finished! (John 19:30).
