30:9
God does not paint a pretty picture of the people to Isaiah, and what He says here applies to all humanity. "They are a rebellious people, lying children". They do not want to hear the word of the Lord. If we are honest this is a pretty accurate picture of our society today. So what are we to do? Two wrong reactions are (i) to close our eyes to the reality, to pretend mankind isn't so bad after all; (ii) to accept it but to lose all hope. We do need to accept the reality, but we also need to remember that Isaiah is a prophet telling about the God who changes things, who makes streams flow in the desert, who is found by those not looking for Him, who transforms rebellious people.
3:10
They told the prophets and seers not to prophecy anything that truly comes from God, for what comes from God is going to be the truth, and the truth about ourselves is not pleasant. Instead they just want to hear nice things, but these would be illusions. We see this in the world, and in parts of the church. The world is quite happy to hear from the church as long as it does not mention Jesus, sin and repentance. In parts of the church which accept prophecy today there can be a desire only to hear nice prophecies, not ones that cut to the heart, exposing the truth.
