Isaiah 29:13,14 - Once more I will astound these people

29:13
Outwardly it would seem that the people of Judah were devoted to God. They had the temple and all the associated rituals, they had the priesthood. Much time and effort was devoted to these things, indeed it would be impossible to explain the nation without the religious observances. But despite all these outward appearances of devotion, their hearts were far from being devoted to the Lord. Moreover, their “worship” was based on man-made rules that they had been taught. It is so easy to drift from true devotion to a man-made sham. The man-made sham does not serve God, but serves men. The true church is utterly God-centred and God-directed.

29:14

So God would “once more” astound these people. God would act. Everyone who seeks to go against God’s ways should bear in mind that God is a God who acts. He is extremely patient, but there comes a point when He will stand by no longer. He would frustrate the wisdom of the wise and the intelligence of men. This reminds us of Paul’s words in 1 Cor 1:18-25, in which he quoted this verse from Isaiah.
