Mark 14:22-26 - Take it, this is my body

14:22-24
This must have been quite a time. The disciples were aware of the atmosphere of great danger, and with the things that Jesus had been saying they knew something was up. The original Passover meal was eaten to commemorate the exodus from Egypt, and it was the blood of the lamb daubed on the doorposts that saved the Israelites from the angel of death. Now Jesus is telling them to feed off Him. Then he tells them that the wine represented His blood poured out for many, and that it was the basis for the new covenant. Remember that the Old Testament covenant would be at the forefront of their minds because of the time of year. Just as Israel always looked back to the Exodus as the defining moment in their history, so we are to look to the cross as the defining moment.

14:25,26

Jesus had spoken about His death and resurrection, and while He knew the full horror of what He was about to go through, He also knew that it was not the end, but the gateway. The kingdom of God was not being defeated, but being established on earth. Passover celebrants were to remain in Jerusalem (Deut 16:7), so Jesus and the disciples did not go to Bethany that night.
