However, they do not just go up and attack Benjamin, instead they give the Benjaminites the chance to admit their guilt and repent. So although the place was pretty lawless, there was still some adherence to godly principles. They tell the tribe of Benjamin to hand over the guilty men, but the tribe refuses. Tribal loyalties are counted as more important than the moral failures of some of their men. There is always a risk that we will put tribal loyalties above righteousness.
20:14-18
So the Bejaminites came together to fight against Israel. They mustered some twenty six thousand armed men. Special mention is given to some left handed men who were very handy with a sling. As an aside note that there have been times when left-handedness has been associated with the devil. There is no support for this nonsense in the Bible. So the battle had four hundred thousand against twenty six thousand. The Israelites did inquire of God, and God answered them, telling them that Judah must lead the battle.
