Acts 21:1-4 - We sought out the disciples

21:1-3

This is a “we” passage, implying that Luke was part of the group that travelled back to Israel. Luke gives details of the journey’s route. They eventually landed at Tyre and sought out the disciples there. Throughout the journeys described they took the opportunity to strengthen and teach the disciples who were in those places.

21:4

We then get a phrase that causes some people problems. It says “through the Spirit they urged Paul not to go to Jerusalem”. The supposed issue is does this mean God didn’t want Paul  to go to Jerusalem? From chapter 20 we know that Paul was fully aware of what likely lay ahead of him, and it was the Spirit who had warned him about what he would face. Indeed, right from his conversion God had told Paul that he must suffer much. The text does not say that Paul should not go, but that the disciples urged him not to go, and it was this urging that was Spirit led. Paul knew that the believers cared for him.
