Judges 7:9-14 - I had a dream

7:9-12

God told Gideon to go down against the camp, for He was going to give it into his hands. God knew that fear dwelt in Gideon’s heart, so he took steps to allay that fear. So God told Gideon to go down to the camp with his servant, and listen to what the Midianites were saying. This would encourage Gideon to attack the camp. So Gideon and Purah went down to the camp. While there they saw how numerous the enemy was, and how many camels they had. This is further stressing that the victory was purely because of the Lord. This whole story does raise the question of why did God choose Gideon? There is little in Gideon’s character to commend him to us, little to seek to emulate.

7:13,14

As well as seeing the vastness of the Midianite army, Gideon also overheard a man telling his friend about a dream. The Lord arranges the finest details of events. The dream involved the Midianite camp being destroyed by a round loaf of barley bread. The man’s friend answered this “could be nothing more than the sword of Gideon”. Evidently they had heard about Gideon, presumably about his toppling of the idols, for he had done little else at this point.
