13:26,27
Paul addresses his audience in a friendly manner, referring to the Jews as “fellow children of Israel”. And he also includes the God-fearing Gentiles, they are addressed as one. As was always the case in the Acts preaching, the message is quite direct that the “people of Jerusalem and their rulers did not recognize Jesus”, but in their condemnation of Jesus they were fulfilling the words of the prophets “that are read every Sabbath”. There seems to be an implied criticism here. If they had listened to the words of the prophets and understood them, then they would have recognised Jesus as the Messiah, instead of crucifying Him.
13:28,29
There were no proper grounds for a death sentence. It isn’t clear who “they” is here. According to the accounts in the gospels, it was Pilate who found no proper grounds for a death sentence (nor any other sentence for that matter), and it was the Jews who demanded the death penalty. The sentence was carried out and Jesus was buried in a tomb. At this point man’s work was finished.
