9:20
If there were any doubts about Saul, they would be quickly dispelled by his preaching in the synagogues. Preaching was more open in those days, as we read of Jesus and Paul being given opportunities to preach in synagogues. Saul preached that Jesus is the Son of God, this would have been seen as downright blasphemous by the Jewish leaders.
9:21,22
Saul’s reputation went before him, he was known as the arch persecutor of the believers, against those who called upon the Name of Jesus. They also knew why he had come to Damascus, yet here he was proclaiming the Name of Jesus! “Yet Saul grew more powerful ...” Saul was steeped in the Old Testament, and now that he had been filled with the Spirit, the scales were well and truly taken off his eyes, and he could see how the Law and the Prophets were all pointing towards Jesus as the Messiah. So he could counter all the arguments of the Jews.
