9:15
“Go!”. God knew exactly what He was doing, as subsequent events clearly demonstrated. Saul/Paul was God’s “chosen instrument to proclaim my name to the Gentiles and their kings and to the people of Israel”. There are times when we worry about the sovereignty of God, thinking that it means we are at the mercy of fate, or that we are mere puppets. Look, such thoughts are utter rubbish and totally unbiblical. The sovereignty of God is a fact, and a very good one, and we need to live our lives in the light of the sovereignty of God. The sovereignty of God does nothing to diminish human responsibility ( at least the Bible doesn’t think so, which is good enough for me), rather it gives us hope in the most difficult of circumstances. I am writing this two or three days after the horrific Hamas attack on Israel. If it is all down to men then the situation is hopeless, but it is not all down to men, God has a part to play!
9:16
“I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.” Paul had inflicted much suffering on the church, and had come to Damascus with the clear intent of inflicting more suffering. God had completely changed the rules of the game. Paul would now experience much suffering for the sake of the gospel.
