Acts 10:17-23 - Why have you come?

10:17,18

Peter’s understanding was not immediate, but he was very soon to find out. The Holy Spirit must have clicked things into place for him  very quickly. For the men sent by Cornelius were just about to arrive. They asked if Simon (i.e. Peter) was staying at the house.

10:19,20

Peter was still thinking about the weird vision he had received, when the Spirit spoke to him. Of course, people can claim to readily that God has spoken to them, but it is equally wrong to say that God never communicates with us directly. The Spirit tells Peter that three men are looking for him, and he must go with them without delay. For these three men were sent by God.

10:21-23

Peter obeyed the prompting of the Holy Spirit and introduced himself to the three men. They explained that Cornelius had sent them, they emphasised the good character of Cornelius, and relayed what had happened with the angelic visitation that he had received. Peter invited them into the house as his guests. Later we will read of Peter saying that it was not lawful (under Jewish Law) for a Jew to enter the house of a Gentile. However, it was OK for a Gentile to enter a Jewish house.
