8:30-32
The altar built at Mount Ebal was a fulfilment of the command given by Moses in Deut 27:4-8, and the altar was built in accordance with the instructions given by Moses, hence the mention of uncut stones and on which no iron tool had been used. A copy of the Law of Moses was written on the stones. All this was a reminder that they entered and took possession of the land because of God’s promises, and that they had to live according to God’s laws if they wanted to remain there.
8:33-35
They now recite the blessings and curses that Moses had given them (Deut 27:9-26 for the curses). The whole Law was read out, and all the people, including women and children, and foreigners living among them, heard the Law. So the people were without excuse, they knew exactly why they were there and how they had to live.
