Acts 7:10-16 - Then a famine struck

7:10

Moreover, God gave Joseph wisdom, and so he gained favour with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Stephen is obviously giving a very condensed version of events, just highlighting the points that were pertinent to his argument. Joseph ended up being ruler over all of Egypt. Jesus is the King of kings, and Lord of lords!

7:11-16

God ordered events so that Joseph’s brothers, and, indeed, his whole family, would eventually go to Egypt. A famine hit the land. Joseph managed affairs in Egypt to save the Egyptians from the famine. The famine and Joseph’s wise management of Egypt also saved Joseph’s family. We can perhaps see a parallel here with Paul’s explanation of God’s plans in Rom 9-11. God has brought salvation to the Gentiles. At some point Israel will become envious and will turn to Christ. So Israel went to Egypt for a time, but they knew that it was not their permanent home, for their bodies were brought back to be buried in Israel.
