Acts 7:30-34 - After forty years had passed

7:30-32

However, as we know, the rejection of Moses was not the end, just as the crucifixion of Jesus was not the end! So forty years later an angel appeared to Moses in the burning bush. In the Old Testament there is a great reverence for God and a fear of seeing God, for He is holy and we are not. They were sometimes reluctant to even use the name of God. So when the Lord appears it is often framed as the angel of the Lord appearing. The Lord begins by stating that He is the God of their fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I.e. everything is in line with all that has gone before, it is a continuation of God’s eternal plan. In the same way, Jesus did not come to overturn what had gone before, but to fulfil it (Matt 5:17).

7:33,34

The Lord appeared to Moses in the burning bush and told him he was on holy ground. There was nothing inherently special about the ground until the Lord appeared there. Life can be very ordinary , seeming to have nothing much to offer, until the Lord appears. Then we are on holy ground and need to act accordingly. Jesus came to earth and lived amongst us. We need to act accordingly. The Lord then announces that He has heard the groans of His people and has come to set them free. Jesus came to set us free, beginning with Israel. And God’s plan involves us, as His plan for releasing Israel from Egypt involved Moses.
