10:7,8
Joshua honoured the oath that Israel had made to the Gibeonites, and took the whole army, including the best fighting men. So the oath was honoured in full, he did not just send a token force. The Lord was with Joshua in this battle, and in a quite miraculous way as we shall soon see. Joshua was absolutely right to honour the oath. Here the Lord assures Joshua that He has given them into his hand.
10:9-11
The army marched all night, further emphasising the seriousness of Joshua’s commitment to Gibeon. This took the attacking kings by surprise. “The Lord threw them into confusion before Israel”. The battle is never all ours, but God gets involved. There are things that we have to do, and which God gives us to do, but that is never the whole story. Our God is an active God. The Israelite army pursued the fleeing forces and killed many of them. However, God killed even more! He did this by sending large hailstones raining down on them. Life should be a matter of us acting in accordance with God’s ways, and God acting in our lives.
