Acts 5:34-37 - But a Pharisee named Gamaliel

5:34

However, there was one who added a calmer note. Gamaliel was a famous teacher of the law, and taught the apostle Paul. He was highly regarded by all people. He wanted to make his comments in private to the Sanhedrin, so the apostles were ushered out. This would increase the chances of the Sanhedrin reacting in a rational manner, rather than just seeking to justify themselves.

5:35-37

Gamaliel reminded them of a recent case, urging them to use this as guidance on how they should treat the current situation. A man called Theudas had appeared and led about four hundred men. He had been killed, and his followers dispersed and it all came to nothing. There were similarities with the current case, except that there were now thousands rather than hundreds of followers, and the death of the leader had not led to the movement fizzling out, but growing all the stronger.
