Joshua 8:14-22 - Hold out towards Ai the javelin

8:14-17

The king of Ai saw some of the troops, but not the ones who were waiting to ambush them. Having experienced the earlier victory, he probably thought that the same plan as before would work again, so he sent all the army out to pursue Joshua. He did not know that he was walking into a trap. So although the previous defeat was a result of disobedience, God still used it for good. The city was left wide open.

8:18-22

Now the Lord gives a direct command to Joshua. He is to hold out his javelin towards Ai, signalling that it was time to take the city. Things were being done at the Lord’s command. The city was set on fire, but there was nothing that the men of Ai could do about it. No survivors were left apart from the king of Ai.
