Acts 6:11-15 - They produced false witnesses

6:11

With Jesus the priests got people to give false testimony against Him, so here the Synagogue of the Freedmen persuaded some to give false witness against Stephen. They claimed that Stephen spoke blasphemy against Moses and God. There are clear parallels here to how Jesus was treated. The outcome will also be very similar. So in Acts we see the life of Jesus being carried on through the church. There are signs and wonders, there is teaching, and there is great opposition and suffering.

6:12-14

The Synagogue of the Freedmen used their accusations and false witnesses to stir up the people, and the elders and teachers of the law. So Stephen was seized and brought before the Sanhedrin. They amassed more false witnesses who made accusations that Stephen was forever speaking against the temple and the law. Of course, using false witnesses was itself against the Law! The specific accusation was very similar to one made against Jesus, namely that Jesus would destroy the temple (Matt 26:61).  In fact, the temple was destroyed in AD 70.

6:15

The people in the Sanhedrin looked at Stephen as the accusations were made, and saw that his face was like that of an angel. When accused for the sake of Christ and the gospel we can expect Jesus to help us. We will see this in the next chapter as Stephen does not cower in the face of these accusations, we will all see that Stephen is stoned to death.
