3:8
“Tell the priests ...” The priests were to step into the Jordan, they were not just to stand at the edge and wait for the miracle, but were to step into the Jordan. And so we see God affirming Joshua by signs and wonders. In the same way, the apostles were affirmed by signs and wonders. Now there are two strands of teaching today (this is a great oversimplification). One expects to see miracles every day. The other hardly ever expects to see miracles, and may even in extreme cases teach that God will definitely not do miracles. God does do miracles and to say He will not do them, or has stopped doing them, is very presumptuous. In the Bible record they do tend to occur in batches, though in the New Testament church they do seem to be more commonplace, but it is also clear that we need to get on with living life in a godly manner.
3:9
Joshua calls on the people to “listen to the words of the Lord your God”. This is the most important instruction we can hear. They are about to enter the Promised Land, about to see a great miracle, with more to follow. Our preparation for anything, for today, for tomorrow, should be to listen to the word of the Lord our God.
