Joshua 3:10-13 - This is how you will know

3:10

“This is how you will know ...”. God defeating their enemies is how the Israelites would know that God was among them. Sometimes we disparage wanting to see God do wonders in our lives, as though it is somehow an inferior faith to want to see God active in our lives. This is definitely not a Biblical view. Our God is a God who acts.  At the same time we should remember that most of Israel proved to be pretty faithless, despite seeing and experiencing the miracles. We should see God working in our lives, and we need to learn from His actions, and to learn to trust Him.

3:11-13

We are now told the immediate miracles that they will see. The ark of the covenant would go into the Jordan ahead of them. The priests were the only ones allowed to carry the ark, but there was also to be one man from each tribe to represent each tribe who would follow them. As soon as the priests set foot in the Jordan the waters would be cut off, so there would be no further flow downstream. Note that they needed to take the first steps before the miracle occurred.
