2:17-20
The spies were keen to ensure that Rahab understood that she had to keep to her commitments if she wanted to be spared. This included tying a scarlet cord in the window of her house, so that the Israelites would know where she was staying.Also, her family members all had to be in the house. In a time of war there is no time for messing about. They also repeat the necessity of not telling anyone what was happening. If we are to put this in terms of salvation in Christ, then the simple message is that it is Christ and the gospel who sets the terms.
2:21-24
The woman agreed with their terms, sent the spies away and tied a scarlet cord on her window. The spies duly went to the hills, and stayed there for three days. After that they returned to Joshua, crossing the Jordan. They reported back to him and gave a very different report to that given by the ten spies to Moses forty years previously, “The Lord has surely given the whole land into our hands; all the people are melting in fear because of us”.
