Joshua 3:1-3 - Joshua and all the Israelites set out

3:1

We now come to the crossing of the Jordan. They had camped at Shittim, and now was the time to enter the Promised Land. They had experienced God’s provision in various ways up until now, but they were not to settle. We need to distinguish between the journey and the destination. It seems that they reached the edge of the Jordan in three days.

3:2,3

The officers went through the camp giving orders for the crossing. The ark of the covenant was essential. Earlier Moses had said he was only prepared to go on if the presence of the Lord was with him (Ex 33:14,15). The ark represented the presence of God with them, and we too should crave the presence of the Lord in our lives. We are meant to dwell in the presence of the Lord. The Israelites were to follow the ark.
