Acts 3:11,12 - Why does this surprise you?

3:11

Peter now speaks to the crowd. He does this both to explain what has just happened, and to urge them to repent and believe in Christ. There is a twofold purpose to miracles, one is the immediate benefit they produce, e.g. healing, the other is to point towards Christ, to deepen our understanding and knowledge of Him. The healed man held on to Peter and John, probably associating his healing with them. The people came running to Peter and John, wanting to know more.

3:12

“Why does this surprise you?” This seems an odd way to begin, it is fairly obvious why it surprised them. It surprised them because they did not know Jesus. Throughout the incident Peter and John seem totally unsurprised. They seemed to consider the event to be perfectly natural. The crowd thought that Peter and John had healed the man. Peter and John make it very clear that the healing did not happen because of any inherent goodness or power within them. If we look within ourselves for the power we will be disappointed, if we look to Christ then we will have a very different attitude.
