Having done all this, the writer urges them not to “throw away their confidence”. We might think that doing a significant act of faith somehow sets us up for life. That is not so, and we can actually be at our most vulnerable. This can happen as a result of pride, or of weariness.

“You need to persevere ...” Perseverance is a highly valued quality in the New Testament, and part of the work of the Holy Spirit is to produce perseverance within us. Perseverance enables us to win battles, it also enables us to reap the fruit of battles. “So that when you have done the will of God...” God is faithful, so when we persist in trusting in Him we will eventually reap a harvest.
