Deuteronomy 25:13-19 - Remember the Amalekites

25:13-16

We are on much safer and more sure ground now! It is basically about honest trading. Weights and measures were to be accurate and honest, and today there are many regulations about weights and measures, and national and international bodies set up so that there is consistency and reliability. The Lord hates dishonest trading, and anyone who does this is liable to receive punishment from the Lord.

25:17-19

Finally we come to the Amalekites. The record of the battle can be found in Ex 17:8-16. It is the one where Joshua leads the fighting, and Moses holds his hands up in prayer. When Moses’ hands were up the battle went well, when they were down the battle went badly. Here we are told of the action the Amalekites had taken and why there was a battle. When the Israelites had taken control of the land they were to blot out the name of the Amalekites. Their sins would not be forgotten. Now this is yet another thing that may seem unduly harsh to us. What can we say? If the Amalekites truly repented then I do not doubt that they would be spared. However, if there is no repentance, there is no forgiveness.
