Deuteronomy 26:12-19 - I have done everything you commanded me

26:12-15

The third year tithe refers back to Deut 14:28 when an additional tithe was to be made. This was to be given to the Levites, foreigners, fatherless and widows. So again we see the Levites being listed alongside the foreigners, widows and orphans. The person giving the tithe was to declare that he had done so, and that he had followed the Lord’s commands. He was also to declare that the offering was “clean”. Then he was to ask the Lord to bless His people.

26:16-19

There has been a fairly comprehensive rerunning of the Laws, focusing on how they were to be applied once in the Promised Land. This is now brought to a close. The people had committed themselves to God, and vowing to continue to obey the Lord, something which they manifestly failed to do. If they had in fact continued to follow the Lord’s commands then He would set them in “praise, fame and honour high above all the nations”. But man is unable to follow the Lord’s commands because we are deeply infected with sin.
