John 1:3,4 - In Him was life

1:3

There is a close correlation between this verse and Col 1:16, “in Him all things were created”. Mark began with John the Baptist, Matthew and Luke began with the birth narrative. John begins with the eternal aspects of Jesus. Absolutely everything was made through Christ. Some people will start by looking at Jesus as a man. Now we should look at Jesus as a man, but if all we do is look at Jesus as a man then we will never grasp anything like the fullness of Christ.  He is fully God and fully man. In Christ God came to save His creation,

1:4

Life and light are almost universal religious motifs. Life is found in Christ alone, and His life is the light of all mankind. A believer finds life when they come to know Christ, but on a broader level societies are better when the principles they are based on are Christian principles. Here I use the term “Christian principles” not in the sense of religious principles, but in the sense of being based on the values and principles that Jesus demonstrates. That includes an awareness that we are created by God and are ultimately answerable to God. We do not realise the extent to which Christian principles have shaped Western democracies. As we are now abandoning those principles as fast as we can, our society will become more corrupt and violent.
