5:1,2
We now get an account of Adam’s family line. “Adam” is also used to simply mean “mankind”, as it is in the second part of 5:1, which can make some parts of the very early chapters of Genesis unclear as to whether they are talking about man in general, or specifically Adam. However, in this chapter the text is clear that we are talking about real individuals.
We also have in these two verses a reiteration of the original creation mandate. The key points are:
(i) we were created by God; (ii) He created us in His image, in the likeness of God; (iii) He created us male and female; and (iv) He blessed us. It is highly significant that these things are reiterated after the fall, after we have sinned. We have sinned and that has had, and still has, the most serious of consequences. Some of these we have already encountered, and the rest of Genesis, and the Old Testament, will be full of many more. However, God’s purposes have not changed. Our sin does not thwart His plans. How can this be? Through Jesus Christ, but it is a while before we come to that! At the moment we should focus on the fact that God’s mandate remains.
