4:8
Sin starts to strengthen its hold on man. Cain had been told what to do, how he should change his behaviour and his attitude, but to no avail. Sin is our fault. We always look for something or someone else to blame. This is never a good thing to do, above all else we need to accept responsibility for our actions. So Cain invites Abel out into the field. Instead of learning from Abel’s right actions Cain kills him!
4:9
“Where is your brother Abel?” God, of course, knew the answer, but He wants to inquire of Cain’s heart. Cain gives a truculent reply, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” The answer to this is actually yes. But Cain is going through the oft repeated dance that we go through when we are trying to avoid being found out, or admitting to our sin. In Chapter 3 we had the general picture of sin, of rebellion against God. We now have the picture of how sin works out in real life, with specific sins. In this chapter we have seen resentment, lack of deviation to God, murder, and lying (disembling might be a more accurate description, but Cain was in effect lying).
