The decision we should make, and that the original hearers had to make, was to wash their robes in the blood of the lamb. Only the righteous are allowed into the holy city, so we need to be washed by Christ. Only then can we have access to the tree of life and the city of God. Conversely there are those who will never get into the city, they will be outside. This includes those who practise magic arts, the sexually immoral, murderers, idolaters and everyone who loves and practises falsehood. This list more or less covers the ten commandments.

It was Jesus who sent “my angel” to you. This is another example of the equivalence of God and Christ. The testimony of the message of Revelation is for the churches, both at the time and throughout history. “I am the root and the offspring of David”. David was a type of Christ, i.e. he exhibited a number of the features of the true king. But we also know that David was a failure. He committed adultery and murder, and then took the census he should not have taken. David was as much a sinner as you and I. So Jesus was the offspring of David. He was the true fulfillment of the godly king. , the one who served God perfectly and without sin. But He was also the root of David. David came from Christ. David was a shadow of reality, Christ is reality. He is the “bright morning star”, the one who heralds a new day.
