29:5
Proper burial of the dead is important in all cultures, and particularly in Egyptian culture. The pyramids and the “book of the dead” testify to this. So the bodies of the dead being left in the open for various birds and beasts to eat them would be particularly galling.
29:6,7
“Then all in Egypt will know that I am the Lord.” This is an oft repeated phrase in Ezekiel. God’s purpose is that His Name is known throughout the earth. With some of the other nations the sin was that they had attacked Israel, Egypt wasn’t so much guilty of this as being a “staff of reed”, an utterly unreliable source of help. She had often encouraged Judah to look for her for help, invited her to join her in opposing Assyria or Babylon, and then proved useless. Looking to Egypt caused nothing but trouble for Israel.
