Ezekiel 28:6-15 - You think you are wise

28:6-10

“Therefore ...” God will show the king of Tyre that he is by no means a god! The last year of all the covid stuff should have demonstrated to us that we are not quite as in control as we think we are. In fact, one of the mistakes we make is thinking that we should be in control. This has a bad effect on us, not just in the sense of being proud, as was the problem here, but in the sense that it causes us unnecessary anxiety, and stops us doing the things that we are meant to do. God does give us responsibilities, and we must seek to fulfill them, but we are not meant to be in total control. Indeed, we cannot be in total control. Only God is in full control, and we are meant to live trusting in Him. So God will bring nations against Tyre and Tyre will not be able to do anything about it. Then Tyre will realise that they are mere mortals.

28:11-15

We now get a section with a lot of allusions to Eden. The Old Testament actually makes very few mentions of Eden, with six of them occurring in Ezekiel. The New Testament has only one! There are some who seek to take this passage as referring to Satan, but the text makes no attempt to do that, so we should dismiss such ideas. What Ezekiel is probably doing is just using a general analogy. Tyre was indeed powerful and wise, and had a godly appointed task. “You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created till wickedness was found in you.” This is true of all humanity. We were created good, but then sin came in and we were corrupted.
