37:2,3
This was a vision that Ezekiel saw, and the Spirit led him among the dry bones, so that he gets the full picture. The bones were dry, emphasising the deadness of them. This represented the current state of Judah, and Israel for that matter. If you see a field of dry bones then the people are dead and gone, there is no hope. God asks Ezekiel “can these bones live?”. The obvious answer is no, but Ezekiel gives a different reply “Sovereign Lord, you alone know”. The future of Israel and Judah was in God’s hands. For our own lives, it is God who determines our destiny.
37:4-6
God did know, and He knew that they would live because that was His purpose. So He commands Ezekiel to prophesy to the bones, “Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord ... I will make breath enter you”. Everything is down to the Lord. Back in Genesis Adam became alive when God breathed into Him (Gen 2:7). It is the Lord who gives life. We need to look to Him. God would supply all that was needed to bring them to life and to enable them to live. “Then you will know that I am the Lord”. A fundamental part of being alive is that we know the Lord.
