3:5,6
The one who overcomes will be dressed in white. We will be prepared, dressed properly, for the great wedding feast. Our names will never be blotted out of the book of life. There is a lot of talk these days about “cancel culture” and if you say the wrong thing, or even think the “wrong thing”, you can be “cancelled”. This can happen to well known people, for ordinary people it can mean not getting promotion, or even losing your job. This sort of behaviour has been common to all authoritarian regimes. In communist countries you could become a non-person. In Nazi Germany being a member of the Nazi party was a route to “success”. But we need to know that there is a much more important book than anything human powers can come up with, and that is God’s Book of Life. Instead, to one who overcomes the Lord will acknowledge us before His Father and His angels. Remember that in the gospels we read of Jesus saying “I never knew you” (Matt 7:23), and in Matt 10:32 He says that if we acknowledge Him, He will acknowledge us before His Father in heaven. These words are very serious and we need to take them very seriously. In our increasingly atheistic society we need to have a firm grasp of the nature of the battle, and of who Jesus really is. He is not just a good man, or a good example, but the Lord of All. And that includes all that opposes us.
The letter closes with the usual injunction to listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Note that each letter is addressed to a particular church in particular circumstances, but the lessons from that letter is relevant to all the churches.
